Mary Green was born on the 26th of September 1850, in Perth. Mary was George and Jane's third daughter. By 1850, the population of the entire colony of Western Australia had increased to 5,886, while the population around Perth was still only about 1,940, approximately equal with that of Fremantle. Mary grew up in Perth with her family. Perth had a village-like atmosphere of scattered single- and two-story brick or stone residences, surrounded by gardens, and remained unchanged until the 1880s and 1890s. |
At 18 years old, Mary married Charles Pearson (born on the 8th of January 1845, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK)
Charles was the eldest son of Francis Watson Pearson & Mary Ann Pearson. Francis Watson Pearson had been engaged in 1851, to come to Western Australia to erect and run a smelting works at Geraldine on the Murchison River. Francis, his wife Mary Ann, plus five children, including the 6-year-old Charles, and equipment arrived in Fremantle, via the Morning Star. |
Following a disagreement with management in 1853, Francis owned a store at Lynton. Francis Pearson then bought a sizeable property in Greenough, where he and his sons took what they learned in Lynton and opened the 'Hampton Arms Inn' on the 1st of May 1863.
Charles Pearson and Mary Green were married on the 25th of January 1869, in St. John's church, in Fremantle. Charles was living and working at the Greenough Flats at the time. (Marriage Reg. 2923/1869)
They then moved to Albany and eventually spent 36 years in the southern seaport. Here, Charles entered into general commercial pursuits; being the first Customs agent at the port, and later having control of the jetties and wharves. Whilst so employed he was unfortunate enough to suffer a severe accident from the effects of which Charles lost a leg. Home to the new Customs office as well as the Post Office was built in 1869. The Perth Rd (also known as the Perth-Albany Rd and later, Albany Highway) had been completed using convict labour in 1853. In the same year the passenger and mail coaches began.
Charles was a keen educationalist and sat for many years on the local Board of Education besides filling offices on various lodges and societies. From 1860-1880 Albany land clearing extended agricultural land and production expanded. New crops were introduced such as flax, which was grown for the manufacturing of canvas. Exports increased, much of it consumable produce such as meat, fruit, and vegetables.
