Henry Hardey
Henry grew up in Lincolnshire, in the Wesleyan tradition, and was 10 years old when his two older brothers; John Wall Hardey and Joseph Hardey along with the 16-year-old William Hardey departed on the chartered brig Tranby. William along with John and Joseph with their recently married wives departed on Wednesday, the 9th of September 1829, bound for the new Swan River Colony. Henry was not to see them again for 21 years. Young William was to die on the voyage, about 12 days from land.
The next to go to Western Australia was brother John Hardey. He had been born on the 7th of May 1779, in Barrow, Lincolnshire. John was Joseph, John Wall, and Henry Hardey's older brother. At age 54 years, John left England and arrived in Western Australia, on the 27th of January 1833, via the Cygnet. John then began working at the Peninsula, on the Swan River, as an agriculturist and established a well-known and productive vineyard on the Peninsula.
Back in England, young Henry married, Dinah Davy (born in 1821), They were married on the 4th of April 1843, at Kirkella, in Yorkshire, England.

On the 26th of December 1860, George Wansbrough sold a property next to the York courthouse to Stephen Stanley Parker and Henry Hardey for 100 pounds. It was used as a bakery. |
Henry, his wife and family, moved north to the Greenough area in 1861.
In May 1864, two properties owned by Henry, in York, were put up for sale. (Lot 183 and Lot 28). He also sold Lot 101, next to the Police Station and opposite the Castle Hotel. Henry is next recorded as working, up north, at "Waneranooka" during 1864, as a 'farmer'. Waneranooka is the site of a copper mine near Northampton WA and had opened back in 1856. The Gwalla Mine was one of the best known of all the copper mines in the district. Opened in 1859, the mine was financed by G. Shenton and Joseph Horrocks (an ex-convict). Between 1863 & 1869, under the management of R. Hutchinson, the mine produced 901 tons of ore valued at 16,573 pounds from depths up to 200 ft. The Gwalla Mine attracted many workers to the 'Mines District', including skilled Cornish miners specifically bought from the UK. The settlement that emerged around the mine, together with the Wanerenooka Mine settlement to the north, combined to form the town of Northampton in 1864.
The mine operated productively from 1859, with Horrocks selling it in 1865 but retaining some interest in its operation until his death from an illness several months later. The succeeding owner died in 1868, after which the estate was locked into probate for the next 40 years before being used for farming.

The Hardey family were in Victoria for about a year then later they moved to New Zealand, before 1872 where their last three children were born. They were recorded as living in Kaiapoi, near Christchurch.
Death of Henry Hardey
Henry Hardey died on the 24th of October 1888, on North Road, Kaiapoi, Canterbury, New Zealand. He was aged 69 years old.

Isabella Marguerit Hardey (nee Elderton) died on the 19th April 1923, in Dunedin, New Zealand. She was aged 88 years. Her body was buried in Otargo, New Zealand.
