It appears that on Friday morning, the 26th of November, William went down the river, alone, in a sailing boat called Eva belonging to his brother Mr. Levi Green, for the purpose of looking at some building stone which he intended obtaining from a quarry at Point Resolution. He was intending to build some cottages. The boat was the winner of the second-class yacht race at the 1880 regatta. As he did not return home on Friday evening, some anxiety was felt by his family as to his safety, having promised to be back before night.
"Early on Saturday morning, one of his steamers and a number of other craft proceeded down the river to search for the missing boat, but no trace of it could be discovered. Further search along the banks of the river resulted in the discovery of Mr. Green's hat and also a small wicker
basket in which he had taken some provisions. The river was dragged all day on Sunday, but the body of the missing man was not found. On Monday, Green's body was discovered within a few yards of the spot where his hat and basket had been picked up on Sunday."
"It seems that the boat when recovered, had a quantity of iron in it, as ballast, and it is the opinion of those most experienced in boating, that it was capsized in a sudden squall on rounding the Point, and that Mr. Green being alone in the boat was unable to attend to the sails in time to avert the catastrophe." (The hanging of Ned Kelly was reported in the same paper)
A week later, William's death was recorded as an Accidental drowning at Point Resolution in the Swan River.
William's body was buried at Karrakatta. William was a father of five surviving children at the time of his death, three years after the youngest, Frederick was born.

The steamer 'Amy' and 'Try Again' were offered for auction on Wednesday, the 9th of February 1881 as part of William's estate. The 100-foot, 40-ton vessel was offered as 'near new' and cost 3,000 pounds to build. At the sale of steamers, the Try Again was knocked down to Mr. W. Laurence for £430. The 'Amy' was bought in at £1,750. This first auction must have been only partially successful. The vessel 'Amy' was again offered on the 24th of November 1881. It was at that stage offered as separate parts, if required (Boiler, Engines, Gear, Hull etc.) That auction was held at the William Street Jetty. Younger brother Mr. James Joseph Green was the Executor of the will. The Herald (Fremantle, WA : 1867 - 1886) Sat 5 Feb 1881 Page 2 |
