Elizabeth Green was born on the 8th of June 1839, in Perth. During this month, Elizabeth's father, George Green was building Joseph Hardey's third house on the Peninsula which became known as 'Tranby House' and still exists today on 'Peninsula Farm' at Maylands.
Elizabeth was 2 years old when her younger sister, Dinah Green [4.] was born during 1841.
Elizabeth grew up in Perth with her parents and siblings.
The 20-year-old Elizabeth married John Blechynden (born on the 14th of April 1833, in Perth, the year after his parents married). John was the son of Harrison (born during 1802, in Kent) and Charlotte Augusta (nee Robus, born during 1812) Blechynden. John's father, Harrison Blechynden was originally a butcher (in 1836) then a farmer and grazier at East Beverley (after John had been born) and at Mt Pleasent. At age 21, John had set out from Beverley to walk south to the Blackwood area. He then applied for land in the district and named it "Bridgedale'. John took up leases of about 1,000 acres on the south side of the eventual town site at about the same time as Edward Hester took leases up about six miles to the north.

Elizabeth and John were married in St. Georges Cathedral, Perth, on Thursday, the 23rd of February 1860. (Marriage Reg. No. Perth:1487/1860) Elizabeth's older brother, William Green [2.] and younger sister, Dianah Green [4.] signed as witnesses. Dinah was set to marry Edward Ridley the next year, in 1861. |
The young couple moved south to the Bridgetown area. Legend has that Elizabeth named the township 'Bridgetown'. John and his wife Elizabeth, along with their growing family, lived at “Bridgedale” which is now considered the oldest building in Bridgetown. John was a pioneer pastoralist in the area and the farmhouse 'Bridgedale' was constructed in on a small lease on the north bank, in sections, with the main part of the home completed in 1863. It originally stood on ten acres of freehold land purchased from the Crown. The home was constructed by John, along with William May and Joseph Green. (who were also involved with building a bridge) It was built several years before the townsite was gazetted. It was therefore the first house in Bridgetown. The bricks were made from clay out of the banks of the river and fired on site. The early settlers arrived by bullock dray along bush tracks. In 1861, a road was constructed with convict labour from (Minninup) Donnybrook, to the Blackwood River at a point which later became the site of Bridgetown.
John used the land mainly for sheep farming. John and Elizabeth planted an orchard and a vegetable garden and kept poultry. John operated the first postal service from his home at Bridgedale since the early 1860s and mail was often delivered to remote homesteads by Mounted Constable Abraham Moulton when on patrol. John became the local postmaster in 1864.

3.1 John William Blechynden was born on the 12th of May 1861, in the little Bridgedale house, at Bridgetown. (Birth Reg. Perth 5816/1861) He was to be the first child of thirteen that Elizabeth gave birth to.
John grew up at "Bridgedale" and farmed with his father and mother and the growing family. He would have been initially schooled at the Bridgedale property. As the Blechynden sons became old enough and learnt the skills of handing horses, they joined their father John in delivering mail and goods in the district. He commenced at the age of 19 years, as a foreman of the ‘Jayes’ sheep station where he remained for 2 years, then he managed the Grange orchards for 4 years and left there for 'Karridale' for Mr M. C. Davis. He remained there for about 6 years until his mother died, when he returned and took over his father’s estate and started the carrying and other businesses. |
John William was known as "JWB" and became a good sportsman and cricketer. John became a member, and then Chairman, of the local Roads Board. He worked at Karradale. John never married although all of his brothers did. When his father John died in 1900, he returned to 'Bridgedale'. He became known as "Uncle John" throughout the district. John was well respected in the community. |
John William worked hard and became a leading transport merchant. He had a number of teams on the roads from Boyanup and Donnybrook prior to the extension of the railway to Bridgetown. John became a butcher, generally dealing with stock and an Auctioneer. For several years John William had an auctioneering business, holding quarterly sales of stock.
'Ford House' in Eedle Terrace, Bridgetown was built during 1896 by John, for William Ardagh Gardner (WAG) Walter and his wife, Lucille Jane Walter (née Thomson, granddaughter of John Septimus Roe Esq. Surveyor General). The five-acre lot was part of John Blechynden Snr’s original freehold 'Bridgedale' property. Ford House was named
after Walter’s father’s house in Somerset, UK. It still exists. At one time John owned a property in the Boyup Brook district called "Greenfields" and then "Glen Lea" on the banks of the Blackwood River. In late 1910, John and his younger sister May went on a trip to New Zealand and back, to visit distant Blechynden relatives. |
