Jane Rowland
Jane Rowland was the first child born to Richard and Elizabeth. She was born on the Peninsula, (now part of the suburb of Maylands) on Monday, September 12th, 1831. Jane was baptised a month later on Sunday October 9th, 1831, by the Rev. J.B. Wittenoom, the Colonial Chaplain. A High Churchman of wide reading and liberal outlook, Wittenoom had emigrated, with his mother, sister and five sons on the Wanstead, the 380-ton ship the Tranby had encountered at Cape Town, on route to the colony.
Jane appears on the Colony's first Census of 1st of July 1832, at entry Number 532: 11 mo, child, born: Western Australia. Jane was two years old when her sister, Mary Rowland was born on the 2nd of July 1833, and then had turned five years old, when baby Ann Margaret was born at the Peninsula. The following year, when Jane was six, Emma Johnson Rowland arrived, on the 19th of December 1837. |

It is doubtful if Jane received any formal education, as her name cannot be found on any school records. It was not yet the age when the State had accepted the principle of free and compulsory education. In Western Australia this did not fully materialise until the close of the century. Her youth would have been spent working on the farm with her parents.
When Jane eight years old, her first brother, Michael Johnson Rowland was born on the 7th of December 1839, on the Peninsula.
In 1843, a committee made a census of the children in Perth, between the ages of four and 12 years. The return indicated that there were about 400 children who came within this age group. Only about 240 of these were attending regular schools. At the time, 40 children were attending the Wesleyan School. Jane had just turned 18 years old when her youngest brother (and final sibling) John Rowland was born in September 1849.

When Jane became “of age” at 21, during 1852, Jane married Mr. John Stokes, They were married in Perth (Marriage Registration Number 461). John was aged 34 years and their marriage was one of only sixty-six marriages performed in the Colony during 1852.
John Stokes, Jane’s husband, had been born in Somerset, England, on October the 20th 1818. He was one of five children that arrived in the colony with their parents; George (born 1782) and Rachel (born 1787) Stokes, aboard the 'Brittanian' on May 6th 1830. This was two months after the ‘Tranby’ arrived at Fremantle. John’s father, George Stokes is mentioned in the 1832 census as a ‘Carpenter’ living in Perth. He was also listed as a labourer and gardener in Perth, and lived in Murray St., on land bought for 2/6 . George was listed as illiterate. He died at his residence in Hay Street, Perth on the 22nd July 1872. His wife, Emma Stokes had died exactly 2 years earlier on the 22 July 1870. |
John Stokes is listed as working in Perth, as a Carpenter during 1844, before he married. Then, he worked as an Overseer of the 'Alder Lake Farm' - A Methodist Missionary Society training farm for the Aborigines, near Wanneroo. The school’s vision was to teach Aboriginal children agricultural and domestic skills to enable them to gain employment in the colony. The ‘Native Experimental Farm’ was located on 56-acres at Gullililup (the eastern shores of Lake Goollelal). He may have been here when he married Jane. The Society paid him 15 pounds a year and his wife 5 pounds. John was a good carpenter and shingle-maker and may have built the school building. He became the Overseer. John left the farm during October 1845 and was replaced by Frederick Waldeck (who was eventually to move to Greenough). The land proved unsuitable for serious farming. By October 1848, Waldeck was appointed superintendent.
From 1855, John and Jane Stokes moved and farmed in the Greenough area. In 1860, John is listed as farming in South Greenough with his younger brothers, William Stokes (born on the 3rd of August 1827) and Carey Stokes (born on the 12th of February 1820). Brother Carey Stokes gave the land upon which the local St James's Church of England was commenced in 1868 and consecrated in 1873.
During the convict period, John employed about 8 Ticket of Leave men at Perth, between 1853 and 1857, and about 9 Ticket of Leave men at Greenough, between 1855- 1871, where be farmed. |
John was listed as being of the Church of England (C/E.) faith. During the early years at Greenough, the Anglicans and Methodists worked closely together as they had done in Perth years before. A service held at Greenough by the visiting Archbishop Blagden Hale was attended by Methodists and Anglicans alike.
