For further information regarding Mary's Parents; |
When Mary was three years old, her younger sister Ann Margaret Rowland was born on the 13th of January 1836. Another younger sister arrived on the 19th of December 1837, at the Peninsula, with the birth of Emma Johnson Rowland.
Very little is known of Mary's early life. It is unlikely that Mary had more than a basic education on the Peninsula.
When she was six years old, her first brother was born, with the arrival of Michael Johnson Rowland on the 7th of December 1839.
When Mary was eight years old, baby Elizabeth Rowland, the fifth Rowland daughter was born on the Peninsula, on the 28th of July 1841. Western Australia's Birth and Death Registration did not begin until 1841 and so baby Elizabeth's Birth Certificate bears the registration number 006.
Tragedy
Two years later in January 1843, Mary's mother, Elizabeth, was once again pregnant, at around 5 months, when her two-year-old daughter Elizabeth Rowland died. The young child is reported to have died of 'suffocation'. In an age when bloodletting and the application of leeches were standard cures for many chronic illnesses, medical attention was difficult to obtain at any time, except at the Colonial Hospital in Perth, or from the small number of medical men turned farmers and landowners.
Her mother went on to give birth to four other brothers and sisters until her youngest brother, John Rowland (the last to be born), in September 1849, at the Peninsula. Mary was then nineteen years old when her oldest sister, Jane Rowland, married John Stokes. They were married during 1852, in Perth.
The next year, Mary Rowland married James Burgess (born in Gloucester, England, in 1820). They were married on the 26th of June 1853, in Perth. Mary was 19 years old. It seems that a James Burgess died in Perth during early 1855?
Mary married Mr. John Fletcher (who had been born on the 6th of September 1832, in Bridlington, Yorkshire. He had come to South Australia at age 17 years). Mary and John were married, in the residence of Absolom Fletcher, in Adelaide, on the 6th of December 1856. Mary was then aged 23 years. Her husband John was a carpenter by trade and later became an undertaker.
