John Rowland
John Rowland, the tenth and last child of Richard and Elizabeth Snr. was born, on the Peninsula (now in the suburb of Maylands), during September of 1849. This was two years after his older brother, William Rowland had been born, and over eighteen years after his oldest sister, Jane.
John's mother Elizabeth was aged 43 years old at the time of his birth and Richard, 47 years old. |

When John's big sister Jane Rowland, became “of age” at 21, during 1852, Jane married Mr. John Stokes, They were married in Perth (Marriage Registration Number 461). John Stokes was aged 34 years and their marriage, was one of only sixty-six marriages performed in the Colony during 1852. John Rowland was three years old at the time.
The next year, John's second big sister Mary Rowland married James Burgess (born in Gloucester, England, in 1820). They were married on the 26th of June 1853, in Perth. Mary was 19 years old, and John was only 4 years old.
Then sister Ann Rowland married four years later, at age 21, on Thursday, April 9th, 1857, the 23-year-old John James Cockman, in Perth. Their first daughter, Alice Cockman, was born the following year and John would have been an uncle again.

In early December 1857, when John was 8 years old, the Rowland house on the Peninsula was gutted by fire while the unmarried children were home alone.
This setback no doubt contributed to his father Richard's decision to consider leasing his Peninsula holdings and take up land north on the Irwin River.
John's early education is unknown.
The 9-year-old John would have been taken to attend his sister Emma Rowland [4.] wedding when she married Sgt William Alderton. The couple were married in the second Wesley Chapel, on the 8th of June 1858. They left the colony for Sydney, then Hobart, within six months.

1860's
John moved to the Irwin area by horse and cart, with his parents and his siblings during 1863. John was fourteen at the time. It is presumed he worked on the lease with his father. It would have been here that he heard of his older sister Emma Alderton (nee Rowland)'s death in Hobart during 1863, at age 25 years.
1870's
John must have returned to Perth later, for John Rowland, when aged 23 years, employed a ticket-of-leave convict, a Butcher, during 1872, at "Peninsula Farm" Perth. His father Richard still owned the land on the Peninsula but was to sell it later.
The 26 year old, John Rowland is mentioned in Western Pioneers: A Battle Well Fought, a book by Jessie E. Hammond, Perth: Imperial Printing Company, [1936.] on the murder, by natives, of Henry J. and William W. Clarkson on the Clarkson Expedition in 1874, to the upper Murchison from the South West with cattle;
".... After the tragedy, a Geraldton Inspector and Mr. John Rowland, of Dongara and party, as well as two brothers of the Clarkson went to the camp....."
".... The brothers were present at the finding of the bodies and broke down and had to be led away. After some unpleasant duties had been performed by Mr. Rowland, the remains were placed in leather pack saddle bags and brought into the main camp. There they were repacked to be taken to the Greenough Flats, some hundreds of miles away and were buried in the Greenough Flats cemetery...."

The brothers railed the heavy belongings and set off in a spring cart, with a milking cow and several horses in tow. Several horses went by road. They camped one night at a farm near Strawberry, the second night at Arrino, and the third night they arrived in the town and stayed at George Booth's house. Next day, they went six or seven miles east to their land; two holdings known as "Billalloo" and "Hill View". The older children could not get to school so they learned farm work early including how to swing and axe to clear the land.
Although Clarrie, and Jim (James Hosley Rowland) owned the land jointly, they worked separately and ran their own farms; gradually worked at clearing the land. Life was hard on the 'Hill View' farm. It was hilly and hard to clear. It was not really large enough as a holding so money was always scarce.
Clarrie then farmed 'Hillview Farm' from 1921 to 1957.

Silas, Gertrude and his two sons lived in Dongara near the Highway. He was listed as a Farm Hand. On 23 May 1914, the Geraldton Guardian reported Mr Silas Rowland had purchased a farm from Mr Jacques at Carnamah. The purchase included 18 horses and plant, all purchased at a satisfactory price. The proposition had been advertised as "a grand opportunity to show a profit the first year" with "liberal terms at sale". The 500 acres became Victoria Location 3328 on the west side of The Midlands Road just south of the Carnamah townsite.
On 24 November, another item in the Geraldton Guardian reported “Mr Silas Rowland was driving a mob of cattle belonging to Mr W B Mitchell to the coast for pasturage on Friday, when one of the animals rushed at him and he narrowly escaped injury. The affair took place at Herbert’s corner and those who witnessed the incident say that the animal was exceedingly furious and chased Mr Rowland, who was on horseback, a good distance.” |

This routine continued through the bleak winter of 1916-17. Early in 1917, the battalion participated in the advance that followed the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line. On 2 April the battalion attacked at Noreuil, a village which had been fortified to delay the Australian advance. Later in the year, the focus of the AIF's operations moved to the Ypres sector in Belgium.
