A younger sister to Ann, arrived the next year, with the birth of Emma Johnson Rowland on the 19th of December 1837, on the Peninsula.

Ann had very little education and was later listed on her marriage certificate as 'illiterate'. This was in an age when education was neither compulsory nor free.
When Ann was 16 years old, the first of her older sisters married. Jane, the oldest of Richard and Elizabeth's children, at age 21, married John Stokes during 1852, and then the next year, Mary, aged 19 years, in June 1853, married John Burgess.
Ann married four years later, at age 21, on Thursday, April 9th 1857, the 23-year-old John James Cockman, in Perth.
John James Cockman had been born on 6th January 1834, in Short Street, Fremantle, in a small stone cottage. John was the son of James Cockman (born 1809, in London, and who died on 3rd July 1877, in Perth).

John's father, James Cockman had arrived as a single, indentured servant, along with 40 other passengers, on the 320 ton ship the "Calista", on August 5th 1829. James was indentured to the merchant, George Leake.
James Cockburn had met and married the seventeen year old Mary Ann Roper (born 1806, in England, daughter of John Roper) who had arrived on the ‘Atwick’. Mary Ann had travelled to the colony, with her brother, as a servant to the Wadell family. James and Mary were married on 15th March 1830, in Perth (the first Anglican wedding in the Colony, and only the third in the Colony. They were married in a tent). In November 1830, George Leake and James Cockman agreed to cancel his indenture. He then had to find his own work in the new colony. In 1831, James was granted the plot of land in Fremantle on which built his first dwelling. From then to the early 1840’s James secured various town lots in Fremantle, and Perth while employed as a thatcher and upholsterer. James and Mary Cockman had seven children. John James Cockman was their second, and was born in Fremantle. (John’s siblings included: older sister Harriet, b. 1832; Ellen, b. 1837; Mary Jane, b. 1841; Amelia, b.1843; Sarah, b.1847; and finally James Samuel Cockman b. 1850)
George Shenton had purchased 640 acres in the Lakes District (now in Wanneroo Shire) and in 1844, asked James Cockman and his son John (then aged 11 years old) to accompany him to the property. Over the next few years, James Cockman travelled from Perth, to the Lakes District, where he cleared the land and made fences for Shenton and built a small dwelling. Young John Cockman may have became a Tailor in Perth as well as assisting his father. In the summer of 1851, with John now aged 17 years, the entire family moved from Perth, to the new house at Wanneroo. They were one of the first Europeans to settle in the area. James was listed as a ‘farmer and Dairyman’ at Wanneroo in 1852. James then purchased Location 103, of 45 acres (18.2 hectares), on the foreshore of Walluburn Swamp, from George Shenton, in June 1853 for 100 pounds. It was here that he established a market garden and dairy farm. John Cockman continued to help his father on the farm until he married, at age 23 years, and moved to Perth. At the time, it took around 8 hours to travel between Wanneroo and Perth along the sandy track through bushland.

Following John's marriage to Ann in 1857, John Cockman and his wife Ann moved inland to GinGin. He was listed as a ‘Farmer and Victualler’ at GinGin at that time. However, their first child, is listed as having been born in Wanneroo, presumably at John's parent's house.
In October 1861, tenders were called in the Government Gazette for a contractor to carry mail once a month from Perth to Champion Bay (now Geraldton) via Moore River. It was not until November 1864 that a contractor was finally secured. In that month, a contract was let to John Cockman to convey the mail from Perth to Wanerenooka, once a month on horseback, for three years, at £249 per annum.

In 1866, John signed, as being a witness, at his brother-in-law Michael Johnson Rowland's wedding, in GinGin. (see Chapter 5.0). Michael Rowland is described at this time, on his marriage certificate, as being a “Mail Carrier” (presumably, with his brother-in law John Cockman).
John Cockman appears to have been the only contractor on this route, for in January 1867, the Government Gazette announced an important alteration to the service. The coast road was abandoned as a mail route and in the future, the inland road via New Norcia, Berkshire Valley, Coorow, Carnamah, Yandanooka, and the Irwin to Dongara was to be used instead. The alteration was to take effect the very next month and it is assumed that John Cockman used this new route for the remainder of the year until John’s contract expired. John recalled in a press interview in 1929: "When I was 30 years of age I carried the mails between Perth and Northampton on horse back. You could not get it on horseback now. I used to take a week to get there, and spent a week at Northampton, a week on the re turn journey, and a week in Perth. The people got their mails once a month. The track then was from Perth to Guildford, Gingin, Yatheroo, Cockle Shell Gully, Greenough Flats, Champion Bay and Northampton."
John Cockman was granted Swan Location 445, at the junction of the Gingin and Bindoon roads, to Guildford, six kilometres north of the present Pearce Air Force Base, around this time in 1867, and set to work building the Victoria Hotel, destined to become very well known in the ensuring years. The same year, saw the end of the transportation of convicts from England to Western Australia. (Hougoumont docked at Fremantle on the 9th January 1868)

˪ 3.1 Alice Cockman, was born on April 12th, 1858, at Wanneroo, the year after her parent’s marriage. (Birth Reg. No. 4206/1858) Alice would have grown up in the GinGin area.
She spent much of her later childhood at the old Victoria Hotel about 30 miles north of Perth, on the Gingin road. All that is left of it today is a heap of bricks and broken plaster, yet in its day it was a famous hostelry. One Sunday evening a team pulled up at the barn. The driver was John Cook, who wanted to purchase hay for his horses. Alice married John A. Cook (Junior) (born on the 25th October1852, at Toodyay). Son of John Cook (born 1808, UK) and Jeanett Ambrose (born in 1834) |
They were married at Middle Swan, on Tuesday, May 27th, 1879, in the colony's Jubilee year. Alice's mother, Ann Cockman was to die just two months later.
