Emma Johnson Rowland
Emma Johnson Rowland was born in Perth, on December 19th, 1837. Her birth was one of fifty-six births recorded in the colony for that year. Young Emma was baptised on June 3rd, 1838, in the Wesley Chapel, Perth, by the Colonial Chaplain, the Rev. John Burdett Wittenoom.
She joined the family which now consisted of Richard and Elizabeth; Jane Rowland, aged 6 years, Mary Rowland, aged 4 years, and Ann Margaret Rowland, aged one and a half. |
For further information regarding Emma's Parents; |
It is presumed Emma grew up on the Peninsula with her parents and was involved in rural life on the farm by the Swan River.
At age 21, Emma married Sergeant William Alderton. William had been born on the 30th of March 1831, in Wymondham, Norfolk, England. William was the son of William Alderton (born in 1805, died 1835) and Ruth Alderton (nee Lincoln, born in 1808, died 1870). William was a Sergeant Groom (Regimental Number 2929) in His Majesties' 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment, when they married in the Wesley Chapel, on the 8th of June 1858. The Reverend Samuel Hardey married Emma and William.
The small Wesley Chapel was situated where Queen’s Hall now stands. William was then aged twenty-six, and Emma was aged twenty-one years old. |
William Alderton had enlisted in the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment, at Bury St. Edmunds, in Suffolk, on the 1st of March 1851 at the age of 19 years. He was a Tailor before joining the Regiment. William was described as 5 ft 6 inches high, with grey eyes and light brown hair. His new Regiment was originally ordered to the Crimea, but this was countermanded and altered to Australia.
After a brief period in Ireland, William left the port of Cork, bound for Australia, in the troopship ‘Camperdown’ on 1st July 1854. The soldiers arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, on the 18th of October after a voyage of 110 days. William had been promoted to Corporal on 1st January 1853, and to Sergeant, on the 2nd of April 1854, so he was a Sergeant before arriving in Victoria. On the 20th of October 1854, William departed from the Melbourne headquarters, with his company, under the command of Captain Quade heading for Ballarat. This was where there was trouble with the gold miners, which culminated in what is now known as the 'Eureka Stockade'. This was where the rebels were violently defeated, and then dispersed, in about fifteen minutes. The finale of the rebellious incident took place in the morning of the 3rd of December 1854. Members of the 12th, and 40th Regiments, plus mounted police took part in the fight. Three of William’s comrades from the Regiment were killed, and seven others were wounded, during the rebellion. William's 1911 recollection of the incident can be found Here.
William then remained at Ballarat for over eight months, until August 1855, when the company re-joined the headquarters of the regiment in Melbourne, marching and bivouacking at Ballan, and Bacchus Marsh, enroute.

During November 1855, one company (around 100 men) was sent to Adelaide, and one company despatched to Launceston. Four companies (including William) stayed in Melbourne until a month later, in December 1855, when three companies were sent to Hobart, and one company despatched to the Swan River Colony. Four months after returning from Ballarat, William sailed from Melbourne, on 25th December 1855, bound for Western Australia. William arrived at Fremantle, at the mouth of the Swan River, on the 8th of February 1856. William's company was initially stationed in Fremantle and then Perth. (Other 12th Regiment comrades were sent to New Zealand, and ultimately fought in the Morie wars.) |
While William was stationed in Perth, he met the lady who was to become his wife. The story goes that William was taking part in an entertainment and Emma Rowland was one of the audience. Emma mentioned that he was the man she would marry, and she did. The Rowland family was at that stage living on the Peninsula Farm east of Perth (now part of the suburb of Maylands). The story goes that Sergeant used to row eight miles (four each way) up the Swan River, to court Emma.
The couple married in the second Wesley Chapel, on the 8th of June 1858. This second 'Centenary Chapel' had been built, to accommodate around 400 people, with the opening service held on the 3rd of January 1841.
Within less than six months after their marriage, the young couple departed Western Australia. Sgt William Alderton (and his wife Emma) headed to Sydney, by ship, during November of 1858. William had been in the Swan River Colony for a little over a year and a half. Emma was pregnant before leaving on the voyage. It must have been distressing to Emma’s parents, Richard and Elizabeth to farewell the young couple from Fremantle. William and Emma landed, in Sydney, on the 3rd of December 1858.
Emma and William had four children together. Three of them were to die as children.
