8. Richard Rowland

Richard Rowland

Richard Rowland (the 2nd 'Richard' or 'Jnr.'), was born 'in Perth' (on Peninsula Farm) on the 31st of March 1845. He was the eighth child to his parents, Richard and Elizabeth. His mother was 39 years old.

Richard junior joined a family of seven other siblings: Jane Rowland who was now 14 years old; Mary Rowland was 12 years old; Ann Margaret Rowland, 9 years old; Emma Johnson Rowland, 7 years. His older brother Michael Johnson Rowland was 6 years old; and his sister Elizabeth Rowland, just 2 years old.

Richard's early childhood and education are unknown, but he is later listed as 'literate'.

In 1852, with Richard then aged 7 years, his big sister Jane Rowland, now “of age” at 21, married a Mr John Stokes (a Carpenter from Waneroo). They were married in Perth. Richard became an uncle the next year with the birth of John Stokes junior in the Victoria Plains district. The same year, Richard and Elizabeths's second daughter, Mary Rowland, then aged 20 years, married Mr John Fletcher, a 21-year-old carpenter from England (born 6th September 1832, in Burlington, Yorkshire). They were married in Perth and later moved to Adelaide to live.

On Saturday, 5th December 1857, when Richard was 12 years old, the Rowland house on the Peninsula was gutted by fire while some of the unmarried children were home alone.

This setback no doubt contributed to Richard Rowland's senior decision to lease his Peninsula holdings and take up land on the Irwin River.

1860's

Richard Rowland junior then moved north, to the Irwin area, with his parents, and siblings during 1863. He was then aged 18 years. Richard then farmed in the area with his father Richard and the rest of the family.
Richard junior was listed as a 'Farmer and Grazier' and leased pastoral land with his older brother, Michael Rowland in the Irwin District. In the 1860's, he leased (or owned) Lots: No. 6982 of 150 acres, 6968 of 150 acres, and No. 2992 of 150 acres in his own right. Richard, at the time, is listed as being 'literate'.

 MARRIAGE
At age twenty-four, during the summer of 1869, Richard married Elizabeth Rhodes. They were married on the 2nd of November 1869 in the Registrar's Offices Greenough. (Elizabeth had been born on 26th June 1848, in Escrick, Yorkshire, England). She was the daughter of John Rhodes (born 24th December 1809, in Killgate (or Wheldrake), Yorkshire, England) and Jane Rhodes (nee Flint, born 18th January 1816, in Farlington, Yorkshire, England, she died on 3rd August 1893).
The Rhodes family had arrived at Fremantle, from Yorkshire, on the 24th of February 1852 on the ship 'Will Watch' with a family of thirteen. John Rhodes was a Stonemason in England and became a farmer in Greenough. He had taken his family north to the Greenough Flats in 1857. One of four families to open up the area, he was a partner of the Cattle Company Scheme of settlement at Irwin River. They all took up tillage leases for yeoman, from the Colonization Assurance Corporation. The Colonization Assurance Corporation was established in 1850, by virtue of a special Act of Parliament.  The principal objects contemplated by its formation were the promotion of Emigration and Settlement in Western Australia. John Rhodes (Elizabeth's father) died suddenly at his residence, on Saturday, 24th of April 1880, in Greenough Flats.

The Rowland family kept their Fogerthorpe property, on the Peninsula, while working the Irwin property up north. In July 1864, when Richard junior failed to pay the rent on his tillage lease, his father Richard wrote an explanation to the Colonial Secretary, offering to make up the arrears, together with any fine which might be imposed. Although Frederick Barlee (later Sir Frederick) accepted Richard offer, his annotation was less than complimentary.
"The Rowlands are honest and well-intentioned people, but ignorant and I am sure, have no intention to defraud the Revenue".

1870's

In 1870, Richard Rowland Junior was again behind in his payments, sending just 10 Pounds on the 15th of June, and applying for a further deferment of the remainder.

Richard Rowland Senior advertised, and then sold his land and buildings on the Peninsula, during 1875, after being behind in payments.

This sale included the 105-acre farm known as 'Fogerthorpe', (that Richard had purchased from the Clarkson brothers in 1845) This had 30 acres under cultivation with a brick two-story house.
In the Electoral Roll of 1903 and 1916, Richard Rowland (Jnr) [8] is listed as "Farmer, - Flowerdale Farm, Dongara", along with his son, Richard Jun (the 3rd 'Richard Rowland' [8.4]).

The mud brick house at Flowerdale was built by Richard and Elizabeth Rowland on the south bank of the Irwin River around 1880. An orchard was grown around the homestead. (The property was sold to Frederick Ellery in the 1940s).  It is the only house remaining in this area along the river. This house
originally consisted of a two-roomed cottage of rendered mud brick construction with a simple hipped roof and a veranda to the front.

Richard and Elizabeth went on to have a family of eight children.

Past Officers of the Methodist Church, Dongara. Richard Rowland Snr is at No.4 and Richard Rowland Jnr is at No. 5 - via the Irwin District Historical Society.

Richard Rowland Junior, and Richard Senior, were active in the Methodist Church.  By 1883, the Dongara community members felt a church for Methodists, separate from Greenough, was badly needed.

So, a meeting was called, presided over by
Rev. Thomas Bird to discuss ways and means. As a result, Messrs F. Pearse, Edward W. Clarkson, R. Pettit, J. Turtin, D. Branch, W. H. Linthorne, Richard Rowland Snr., Richard Rowland Jnr. and Frederick Waldeck were called to form a building committee.

Shortly after, tenders were called and W.H. Linthorne was appointed to build the church at the contract price of £314.

Richard's father, Richard Rowland Senior, died on the 15th of August 1883, before the church was completed.
The Church building was erected in 1884, and the first resident minister appointed in 1885. The Rev Thomas Bird laid the foundation stone, and the two opening services held in 1884 were attended by 218 persons.

The first officers of the church were F. Pearse (Society Steward), D. Brand (Chapel Steward), Edward Winteringham Clarkson and R. Pettit (Poor Stewards), John Rowland and M. Fripp (Caretaker). The first minister was the Rev. E. Holiday. Since June 1977 the Church has been part of Geraldton Region Parish of the Uniting Church in Australia.
